Metallic Leaf

Artist Ruth Winding creates “gilded backgrounds of metallic leaf upon wood, overlaid with hand-painted detailing” and rather pretty they are to. Photographing highly reflective gold leaf using lights has its own complications. Much like photographing someone standing in front of a mirror, you must always remember kids: the angle of reflection is equal to the angle of incidence. A lot of time was spent getting the specular highlights on the canvas under control zzzzzzz.

Undercling

I spent a few hours with a couple of pro-climbers Ben and Matt at the Climbing Centre in St Werburghs last week. The physiques and upper body strength on these guys is remarkable, they were both quite at home hanging on by their fingers with me shouting my favourite saying ‘just one more’ from the floor. I’m still editing the shots but this picture immediately stood out at showing off the exceptional muscle definition in Ben’s back.

Power Up

This is Dave, he’s a safety specialist at Didcot B Power Station. Photographed for a recent N-Power commission. Didcot B is easily one of the most interesting locations I’ve shot at in the last year. An industrial behemoth straight out the seventies, very cool, although as Dave pointed out perhaps not so cool if you go to work there every day.

No. 7 Kew Bridge

Here’s a recent portrait of the acclaimed painter Jason Bowyer, photographed working in his studio in Kew for Artist & Illustrators magazine. It’s early in the year but Jason is already a strong contender for my annual ‘Artist with the largest piles of paint on a pallette’ award.

Collected Wisdom

Mrs Jones was once caught out by Frank Skinner. Whilst reviewing a stand-up gig at a comedy club in West London Frank Skinner snatched the notes she’d been writing and read the not so flattering review of the warm-up act out to the audience. Mrs Jones isn’t a fan of Frank’s. As with the Jarvis Cocker story I didn’t get around to sharing the funny anecdote during the shoot.
